Comparison of Private and NHS Emergency Dentist Prices

March 29, 2023 by Haadi Leave a Comment

Ignorance is quite expensive even in the healthcare sector too. Several healthcare facilities tend to reap patients off their hard earned money. They capitalize on your burning desire to get free from discomforting pain.

Therefore, this guide seeks to enlighten you on the standard charging structure present in the dental health sector. These charge rate encompasses the rates you can expect from both a private and NHS dental clinic.

Band charges for NHS dental care 2023

Presently, there are three bands of NHS charges. These band rates depends on the type and level of dental healthcare you’ll be needing. These bands are:

Band One: Price £23.08

This band rate is meant to include treatments such as fluoride application, diagnosis(with X Ray also), examination, preventive advice, scale and polish if needed.

Band Two: Price £65.20

Being a higher band, it definitely includes all listed services of band one. It also includes other non-surgical gum treatments, root canal, fillings and tooth removal.

Band Three: Price £282.80

Of course, this package include dental care services of both band one and two. Also inclusive are complex treatments such as bridges, orthodontic and crown treatments.

So the way these band rates work is that for every treatment plan, you are expected to pay only once. If the treatment you need falls under band two, even if it involves several appointments at the clinic, a one-time payment will suffice.

Also, dentist are under obligation not to refuse available NHS treatment and then offer that same treatment privately. Although your dentist can suggest suitable private treatment options, they are not allowed to portray NHS treatment as inferior.

Certain age grades are entitled to free NHS dental care. This includes persons below the ages of 18 or 19 if they enrolled in full-time education. Pregnant women too are entitled to free NHS dental care.

Always do well to enquire from your dentist if he does not have the price list prominently displayed.

Differences between Private and NHS dental costs

After several sample analysis of dental charge rates within the country, here are the differences we observed. We looked at the individual charges of the various dental healthcare services in private clinics. Here’s how the rates differ between private and NHS packages:

Consultation or check-up for new patients:

Private: £20 to £120

NHS: £23.80 (Band 1)

Of course with a clear difference in emergency dentist London price rates between these two, it is not surprising that you’ll get more attention if you opt for private care. In fact, if you want to be seen quickly without taking a time off work, choose private appointments.

It is best to have an understanding of what your consultation involves. How long will it last? Will subsequent appointments be scheduled and how much it cost? Will the consultation require an X-ray? What type of X-ray? And so on.

Radiograph/X-rays

Private: £5 to £40

NHS: £23.8 (Band 1)

Simple X-rays for patients usually cover only the back teeth known as the bite-wings. But if your dentist requires a more complex X-ray, you’ll be needing the services of a specialist. This complex X-ray will display your whole mouth, from one ear to the other. If done privately, this may be more expensive. But anyways, your dentist should educate you on what options are available.

Scaling and Polishing

Private: £25 to 85£

NHS: Either £23.80 (Band 1) or £65.20 (Band 2 deep washing)

Usually scaling and polishing are meant for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes. So you can opt out of it if it is not clinically necessary. For this procedure, you’re likely going to be sent to a private hygienist which may incur more cost in some clinics.

As said above, unless it is necessary, there isn’t an evidence that routine scaling and polishing improves one’s oral health.

Root canal treatment

Private: £45 to £970

NHS: £65 (band 2)

Root canal treatment seeks to save a tooth whose root is affected by deep decay. There’s a wide variation in charges by different private clinics. This is because root canal treatment could be technically demanding depending on the complexity.  Also the size of the tooth and its position can also affect the cost.

How To Discover Suitable Emergency Dentist London Price Rates

In London, you can make use of the NHS website to locate a nearby dentist. It is ideal to book appointments with nearby dentists so that you can easily get there if an urgent dental issue arises. Have it in mind that you are not to make deposits before booking an appointment.

Ensure while booking you are conscious as to whether you are booking a private or NHS appointment. This is vital in order not to get surprised at the emergency dentist price you’ll receive. For NHS, in order to get a slot on the date of your booking, try to book some days ahead of time.
